"I went to the WHIA Conference some years ago as a presenter. Who would have thought that the person who really stole the show was a book-keeper!
During her presentation, Jennifer from EQ Bookkeeping said she was prepared to accept "shoe box accounting" from anyone (like me) who was terrible at keeping books and whose accounting technique was to stuff everything (that we hadn't lost!) in a shoebox.
Well mine was worse...it was a suitcase!
So the very next day I went out, got a huge yellow envelopes (it might have even been two it was such a mess!), stuffed in every scrappy bit of paper I had! I didn't sort the mess. I couldn't. I was worn out, overworked, stressed out, and just didn't know where to start. In it I stuffed receipts, notes that meant nothing, invoices, accounts with no idea if they were paid or not, boarding passes, dry cleaning dockets, probably even valet parking tickets! I have no idea what I sent. I just sent everything. It was a mess. I didn't even unfold half of them...just stuffed them in.
One year later....I was stunned to simply receive an email with my tax form, sign it and email it back. THAT WAS IT! I hardly lifted a finger. I couldn't believe it!
Jennifer has my total trust and confidence, so I gave her access to my bank statements on line. That means, instead of keeping every stupid bit of paper, hotel receipts, travel documents, I just pay on my card, and she does the rest. As a horse person, she knows what all the payments mean, and these days the banks have references, so she gets 100% of my deductions, no questions, no fuss, just BRILLIANT. She just took my mess away in the blink of an eye. And I CAN SLEEP NIGHTS! I was worried sick, and now I don't do anything at all!
And the biggest surprise...the cost! Instead of losing money because I don't know where any of my receipts/deductions are (in some suitcase somewhere in the world I guess). This way every single cent is automatically accounted for without me lifting a finger. That means instead of COSTING me money, she's SAVING me a fortune.
I've gone from worried sick and not knowing what to do, to one year, and one envelope later....able to sleep nights. It's the biggest relief of my life! I have now "given in", and have a new saying "let the professionals do their job". I do my job, let someone else handle those things for me. It saves me a fortune!
